ADOW Launches Updated New Hire Portal

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Workforce (ADOW) is pleased to announce the launch of a new and improved application for reporting new hires. While many features of the current system will remain the same, the new application includes several enhancements designed to streamline the reporting process and improve usability.

These changes will be effective December 4, 2025.

All Alabama employers MUST report all new hires to the state within seven days to remain in compliance with state law.

The portal can be found at:

Important Information for Employers:

• All Alabama employers will be required to register in the new system.
• To register, an employer will need the following information:
  • Their Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)
  • Their Alabama Employer Account Number (EAN)
• During registration, the user will be prompted to enter a valid email address. A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to this email, which must be entered into the application for identity verification and to complete the login process.
• The user will have the option to add up to five additional filers who can manually enter or upload new hire records for the associated FEIN.
• The application will support the following file formats for uploading new hire records:
  • Comma Delimited (.CSV)
  • Tab Delimited (.TXT)

Alabama’s Labor Force Participation Rate Increases to 57.6%

State Sets New Record Highs for Civilian Labor Force, Employment, and Jobs Count

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Marty Redden announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for October increased by one-tenth of a percentage to 57.6%. The percentage of prime-age workers decreased by two-tenths of a percentage point to 79.1% over the month. Over the year, this number increased by one percentage point from 78.1%. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

“This month we experienced a slight increase in our labor force participation rate.  Any growth is always welcome news,” said Redden. “Additionally, the year over year growth of prime age workers is also encouraging. Nearly 80% of those prime age workers are out there doing their jobs and providing for their families.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 2.9%, unchanged from September 2024’s rate. October’s rate is higher than October 2023’s rate of 2.8%. The rate represents 69,271 unemployed persons, compared to 67,395 in September and 64,027 in October 2023.

The number of people counted as employed grew by 18,840 over the year to 2,280,863, a new record high. The civilian labor force also reached a new record high, with 24,084 more people joining over the year, bringing the new total to 2,350,134.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 40,400 to 2,220,700, a new record high, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+10,500), the government sector (+6,300), and the leisure and hospitality sector (+5,800), among others.

Over the month, wage and salary employment increased by 7,600, with gains in the professional and business services sector (+3,000), the government sector (+2,900), and the private education and health services sector (+1,100), among others.

“While Alabama employers continue to add jobs at record high rates, we’re also seeing wage growth, which is beneficial to our entire economy,” continued Redden. “We are currently supporting more jobs than ever before, and our hard-working citizens have seen their average weekly wages increase over the year by nearly $25 a week.”

Average weekly wages increased over the year by $24.97 to $1,056.18. The construction industry also realized its record high wages, peaking at $1,385.67 in October, representing a yearly increase of $114.61 per week.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby County at 2.4%, Marshall County at 2.5%, and Madison and Morgan Counties at 2.6%. Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Wilcox County at 7.7%, Clarke County at 6.1%, and Dallas and Greene Counties at 5.9%.

Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates are: Homewood, Vestavia Hills, and Trussville at 2.2%, Alabaster and Hoover at 2.3%, and Madison at 2.4%.  Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Selma at 6.9%, Prichard at 5.7%, and Bessemer at 4.5%.

MONTGOMERY – Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division shows that in October 2024, there were 79,656 job ads posted in Alabama, representing a monthly increase of 0.6%.

The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, and Fast Food and Counter Workers with 13,152 ads placed for those occupations in October.

The HWOL data is compiled from all online job postings in the state, including those posted on the state’s free online jobs database, AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, and other sources, such as traditional job boards, corporate boards, and social media sites.

In October 2024, there were 32,617 total job ads with salaries, including 9,238 jobs ads with salaries of $70,000 and above; 9,206 jobs ads with salaries in the $35-49,000 range; 5,747 jobs ads with salaries in the $50-69,000 range, and 8,426 jobs ads with salaries less than $35,000.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in October were Walmart with 1,876 ads and Huntsville Hospital with 975 ads. The rest of the top 10 were: UAB Medicine (824), USA Health (476), Auburn University (474), The University of Alabama at Birmingham (462), Regions Financial (441), Jack’s Family Restaurants (429), Baptist Health (416), and CVS Health (401).

This month’s HWOL Occupation Focus is Software Developers. Those employed in this occupation research, design, and develop computer and network software or specialized utility programs. They may also work with computer hardware engineers to integrate hardware and software systems and develop specifications and performance requirements or maintain databases within an application area, working individually or coordinating database development as part of a team. Typically, employees in these occupations usually need a four-year bachelor’s degree, but some do not.  This occupation may also require several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training. The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, and Customer Service Representatives with 12,361 ads placed for those occupations in May.

In May 2025, there were 25,250 total job ads with salaries, including 7,422 jobs ads with salaries of $70,000 and above; 6,870 jobs ads with salaries in the $35-49,000 range; 4,274 jobs ads with salaries in the $50-69,000 range, and 6,870 jobs ads with salaries less than $35,000.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in May 2025 were Huntsville Hospital with 1,100 ads and Domino’s Pizza with 939 ads. Alabama’s November Labor Force Participation Rate Remains Unchanged

Wages, Civilian Labor Force, and Jobs Count at New Record Highs

 MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Marty Redden announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for November remained unchanged at 57.6%. The percentage of prime-age workers decreased by two-tenths of a percentage point to 78.9% over the month. Over the year, this number increased by half of a percentage point from 78.4%. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 3.1%, up from October 2024’s rate of 2.9%. November’s rate is above November 2023’s rate of 2.8%.  The rate represents 73,278 unemployed persons, compared to 69,257 in October and 64,404 in November 2023.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 17,150 over the year to 2,278,876. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,352,154, a new record high, with 26,024 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 37,300 to 2,232,000, also a new record high, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+8,800), the leisure and hospitality sector (+6,500), and the government sector (+6,200), among others.

“Alabama employers continue to add jobs at a record pace,” said Redden. “Only a few short years ago, our goal was to break two million wage and salary jobs.  Now, we’re climbing closer and closer to two and a quarter million. This represents remarkable progress.”

Additionally, average total private weekly wages increased by $42.38 over the year to $1,065.50, a new record high.

Several industry sectors in Alabama saw record high employment in November, including: the trade, transportation, and utilities sector (420,100) (tied with record set in 2022), the financial activities sector (105,900), the professional and business services sector (270,800), and the private education and health services sector (277,000).

“We’re seeing great growth in both employment and wages in Alabama,” continued Redden. “More people working and more money in their pockets is always welcome news, especially at the holidays.”

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby County at 2.6%, Morgan County at 2.7%, and Chilton, Cullman, Madison, Marshall, and St. Clair Counties at 2.8%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Wilcox County at 9.3%, Clarke and Greene Counties at 6.6%, and Dallas County at 6.4%.

Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates are: Homewood at 2.3%, Hoover and Vestavia Hills at 2.4%, and Madison at 2.5%.  Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Selma at 7.4%, Prichard at 5.8%, and Bessemer at 4.9%.

“Seasonal adjustment” refers to BLS’s practice of anticipating certain trends in the labor force, such as hiring during the holidays or the surge in the labor force when students graduate in the spring, and removing their effects to the civilian labor force. 

The Current Population (CPS), or the household survey, is conducted by the Census Bureau and identifies members of the work force and measures how many people are working or looking for work.

The establishment survey, which is conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, surveys employers to measure how many jobs are in the economy.  This is also referred to as wage and salary employment.

In November 2024, there were 31,638 total job ads with salaries, including 9,189 jobs ads with salaries of $70,000 and above; 8,690 jobs ads with salaries in the $35-49,000 range; 5,411 jobs ads with salaries in the $50-69,000 range, and 8,348 jobs ads with salaries less than $35,000.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in November were Huntsville Hospital with 1,089 ads and Walmart with 923 ads. The rest of the top 10 were: UAB Medicine (788), Taco Bell (692), Jack’s Family Restaurants (503), Circle K (421), Regions Financial (418), Baptist Health (411), Auburn University (390) and The University of Alabama at Birmingham (385).

Those employed in this occupation instruct or coach groups of individuals in exercise activities for the primary purpose of personal fitness and demonstrate techniques and form, observe participants, and explain to them corrective measures necessary to improve their skills. They may also develop and implement individualized approaches to exercise. Typically, employees in these occupations usually need a High school diploma or equivalent. This occupation may also require one or two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. The advertised median salary for Exercise Trainers and Group Fitness Instructors in Alabama is $47,232. This occupation has 805 Annual Total Openings in Alabama.

Alabama’s Labor Force Participation Rate Held Steady in June

Wages, Employment, Jobs Count, and Workforce at New Record Highs

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for June held steady at 58.0%. Over the year, this number increased by half of a percentage point from 57.5%.

“As our numbers continue to increase, we are making real changes to Alabama’s workforce,” said Reed. “We are continuously setting new economic records and strengthening our state. Our successes in these areas will benefit all Alabamians.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted June unemployment rate is 3.2%, down from May 2025’s rate of 3.3%. June’s rate is higher than June 2024’s rate of 2.9%.  The rate represents 75,624 unemployed persons, compared to 78,214 in May and 69,099 in June 2024.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 35,548 over the year to 2,310,370, a new record high. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,385,994, also a new record high, with 42,073 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 22,400 to 2,219,700, a new record high, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+8,000), the government sector (+4,600), and the leisure and hospitality sector (+4,300), among others.

Average weekly wages in the state increased by $65.30 over the year to a new record high of $1,118.84.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby County at 2.4%, St. Clair, Morgan, Limestone, Elmore, and Blount Counties at 2.5%, and Marshall, Madison, DeKalb, and Autauga Counties at 2.6%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Perry County at 6.8%, Greene County at 6.6%, and Wilcox County at 5.6%.

Alabama’s Unemployment Rate Drops in September

Over the Year, 22,000 Jobs Added

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted September unemployment rate is 2.8%, down from August 2025’s rate of 2.9%. September’s rate is lower than September 2024’s rate of 3.3%.  The rate represents 66,711 unemployed persons, compared to 68,156 in August and 76,773 in September 2024.

“Our unemployment numbers continue to be positive, showing significant gains over the year,” said Reed. “We are continuing to see our prime age workers participating in the labor force. Nearly 80% of workers who should be working are working.  This is very positive news.”

Additionally, Reed announced that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for August held steady at 57.7%. The percentage of prime-age workers increased by a tenth of a percentage point to 78.4% over the month. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 28,752 over the year to 2,310,238. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,376,949, with 18,690 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 22,000 to 2,213,000, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+9,200), the construction sector (+4,700), and the leisure and hospitality sector (+4,100), among others.

Reed emphasized that maintaining this progress will require continued partnership between industry leaders, workforce development programs, and policymakers. “We’re committed to supporting workers with the training, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy,” Reed said. “The data shows that our efforts are paying off.”

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby County at 2.3%, Limestone, Elmore, and Blount Counties at 2.4%, and Autauga, Madison, Marshall, Morgan, and St. Clair Counties at 2.5%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Greene County at 5.9%, Perry County at 5.8%, and Wilcox County at 5.7%.

Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, and Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, are the Top Jobs in JUNE

MONTGOMERY - Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Workforce’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division shows that in June 2025, there were 85,681 job ads posted in Alabama, representing a monthly increase of 2.8%.

The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, and Customer Service Representatives with 13,894 ads placed for those occupations in June.

The HWOL data is compiled from all online job postings in the state, including those posted on the state’s free online jobs database, AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, and other sources, such as traditional job boards, corporate boards, and social media sites.

In June 2025, there were 29,916 total job ads with salaries, including 8,664 jobs ads with salaries of $70,000 and above; 8,029 jobs ads with salaries in the $35-49,000 range; 5,034 jobs ads with salaries in the $50-69,000 range, and 7,919 jobs ads with salaries less than $35,000.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in June 2025 were Huntsville Hospital with 1,123 ads and Walmart with 991 ads. The rest of the top 10 were: Domino’s Pizza (948), UAB Medicine (701), University of Alabama at Birmingham (637),Taco Bell (607),   AutoZone (453), Baptist Health (428), The University of Alabama (401) and Circle K with 400 ads.

This month’s HWOL Occupation Focus is Physical therapist Assistants .Those employed in this occupation Assist physical therapists in providing physical therapy treatments and procedures. Employees may also assist in the development of treatment plans, carry out routine functions, document the progress of treatment, and modify specific treatments in accordance with patient status and within the scope of treatment plans established by a physical therapist. PELLA: Fly 2.0 Takes Flight — Aviation and Aerospace Summer Camp Soars into Montgomery Public Schools

MONTGOMERY — During the week of July 21^st – 25^th, 2025, rising 9th grade students from Montgomery Public Schools participated in PELLA: Fly 2.0, a weeklong summer camp dedicated to hands-on aviation and aerospace education.

The camp is powered by a transformative partnership between the Air University Innovation Accelerator (AUiX), Auburn University’s GEAR UP Achieve program, the Alabama STEM Council, and Montgomery Public Schools. Together, these organizations are creating immersive STEM opportunities that connect students directly to the future of flight, engineering, and innovation.

Throughout the week, students engaged in real-world activities at aviation learning stations, toured local aviation infrastructure, and explored career paths with industry professionals. Each student received more than an hour and thirty minutes of hands-on flight experience during two days of discovery flights from Dannelly Field. Highlights included appearances and workshops by: Tuskegee University, Flight Works Alabama, Civil Air Patrol, Montgomery Regional Airport, RD Aire, Alabama Technology in Motion, and many more community and industry partners.

“Partnerships like these are so beneficial to everyone involved,” said Greg Reed, Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary. “Students were able to gain valuable exposure to an exciting industry with unlimited potential for growth in Alabama.”

“This is more than a summer camp — it’s an investment in Alabama’s future workforce and a celebration of what’s possible when education, opportunity, and purpose come together,” said DeVanté Snell, Chief of Events and Public Outreach at AUiX.

Alabama Department of Workforce Awards $11.75 Million in 2023 OSMRE AMLER Grants to Transform Abandoned Mine Lands in Hoover

Montgomery, Alabama – The Alabama Department of Workforce (ADOW), in partnership with the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), today announced the award of $11,751,607.34 in Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) grants for fiscal year 2023. Two innovative projects in Hoover, Alabama—Broad Metro’s Stadium Trace Village Phase 2 Project and Signature Homes’ I-459 Exit 9 Parkway Extension—will each receive $5,875,803.67 to support abandoned mine land (AML) reclamation and construction efforts. These initiatives aim to eliminate environmental hazards, enhance public safety, and drive economic growth in coal-impacted communities.

The AMLER Program, funded through federal appropriations, targets legacy coal mining sites abandoned before 1977, converting them into productive assets for local economies. The selected projects demonstrate a strong connection between reclamation and community benefits, including job creation, infrastructure improvements, and new development opportunities in Jefferson and Shelby counties.

Broad Metro’s Stadium Trace Village Phase 2 Project will revitalize approximately 121 acres of undeveloped land, incorporating a state-of-the-art 80,000-square-foot South Haven Surgical Plaza, a hotel, retail spaces, and green areas. This mixed-use development is expected to create over 300 temporary construction jobs and 200 permanent positions, while preserving natural features and providing new recreational and commercial options for residents.

Signature Homes’ I-459 Exit 9 Parkway Extension will construct a new interchange and bypass road between Exit 6 at Morgan Road and Exit 10 at John Hawkins Parkway, easing traffic congestion and unlocking access to surrounding areas for residential and commercial growth. The project includes connections to Ross Bridge Parkway and supports broader annexation efforts, fostering economic expansion in western Hoover.

“This $11.75 million investment underscores Alabama’s commitment to transforming abandoned mine lands into vibrant, productive spaces that benefit our communities,” said Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed. “These projects not only restore our environment but also create jobs and spur economic development in areas that have long shown the impacts of past mining activities.”

“Through the AMLER Program, we are turning liabilities into assets for Alabama’s coal-impacted counties,” said Deputy Secretary and Acting Director of Mining and Reclamation Jennifer Holton. “We look forward to partnering with communities to fund innovative projects that create lasting benefits.”

The grants will fund AML reclamation activities, such as hazard mitigation and site preparation, alongside project construction to ensure sustainable redevelopment. ADOW encourages collaboration with local governments, economic development organizations, and nonprofits to maximize the program’s impact.

Alabama’s Labor Force Participation Rate Increases to 57.7% in December

Jobs Count and Weekly Wages at New Record Highs

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Marty Redden announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for December increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 57.7%. Over the year, this percentage has increased by three-tenths of a percentage point. The percentage of prime-age workers remained steady over the month at 78.9%. Over the year, this number increased by four-tenths of a percentage point from 78.5%. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

“It’s encouraging to see growth in our labor force participation rate in December, especially in the year-over-year comparison.” said Redden. “We have a mission to increase the number of people in our workforce, and we are working hard to do just that.  Our prime age workers are continuing to do their part and are either working or joining the labor force.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted December unemployment rate is 3.3%, up from November 2024’s rate of 3.1%. December’s rate is above December 2023’s rate of 2.8%.  The rate represents 76,643 unemployed people, compared to 73,265 in November and 64,101 in December 2023.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 18,803 over the year to 2,280,007. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,356,650, a new record high, with 31,345 more people joining over the year.

Average weekly wages increased to a new record high, with the total private sector registering $1,094.21 a week, which represents an increase of $50.09 over the year.

Several sectors also saw new record high weekly wages, including: trade, transportation, and utilities at $918.31, professional and business services at $1,395.37, and private education and health services at $1,047.85.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 39,900 to 2,234,300, also a new record high, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+11,500), the leisure and hospitality sector (+7,800), and the government sector (+6,500), among others.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby County at 2.4%, Morgan and Marshall Counties at 2.6%, and Madison, Cullman , Chilton, and Cherokee Counties at 2.7%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Wilcox County at 8.5%, Clarke County at 6.8%, and Greene County at 6.6%.

Alabama’s Unemployment Rate Holds Steady at 2.7%

Number of People Employed at New Record High

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December held steady at 2.7%. This is below December 2024’s rate of 3.3%.  The rate represents 64,150 unemployed persons, compared to 65,264 in November and 78,478 in December 2024.

“Alabama continues to lead the nation with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country,” said Reed. “More and more people are entering our workforce and they are finding good, meaningful employment. I’m proud of Alabama’s achievements and hope to continue making strides in the year ahead.”

The number of people counted as employed increased by 35,819 over the year to 2,317,206, a new record high. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,381,356, with 21,491 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 9,100 to 2,221,300, with gains in the leisure and hospitality sector (+6,700), the private education and health services sector (+4,900), and the construction sector (+3,400), among others.

“As we continue to grow jobs in Alabama, wages are also increasing,” continued Reed. “For example, the construction sector saw a new record high in wages this month. When construction wages increase, that signals positive economic growth, with each construction dollar spent generating an additional $2-$3 in related economic activity.”  Wages in the construction sector increased over the month to a new record high of $1,421.56 weekly.

Alabama’s Labor Force Participation Rate Decreases Slightly

Employment at New Record High

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for July decreased slightly to 57.9%, down from 58.0% in June. Over the year, the rate increased by four-tenths of a percentage point. The percentage of prime-age workers also decreased slightly by one-tenth of a percentage point to 78.4% over the month. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

“Our unemployment rate continues to remain low and is well below the national unemployment rate,” said Reed. “We are continuing to see yearly gains in our labor force participation rate, and our economy added more than 28,000 new jobs. These are all signs of continued positive economic news in Alabama.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted July unemployment rate is 3.0%, down from June 2025’s rate of 3.2%.  July’s rate is equal to July 2024’s rate.  The rate represents 72,506 unemployed persons, compared to 75,640 in June and 71,308 in July 2024.

Alabama’s Labor Force Participation Rate Holds Steady at 57.5%

Civilian Labor Force, Employment, and Jobs Count Reach New Record Highs

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for June held steady at 57.5%, but increased four-tenths of a percentage point from June 2023. The percentage of prime-age workers increased by 1.4 percentage points to 79.2% over the year. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

“The number of prime age workers increased by more than one percentage point since last year,” said Washington. “Combined with the growth in the civilian labor force, the growth in employment, and the growth in jobs, these numbers are all excellent indicators of Alabama’s economic picture.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted June unemployment rate is 2.9%, down from May 2024’s revised rate of 3.0%. June’s rate is higher than June 2023’s rate of 2.3%.  The rate represents 67,784 unemployed persons, compared to 70,668 in May and 53,412 in June 2023.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 20,417 over the year to a new record high of 2,270,227. The civilian labor force also increased to a new record high to 2,338,011, with 34,789 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 47,500 to 2,218,400, also a new record high, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+11,900), the government sector (+8,900), and the manufacturing sector (+7,700), among others.

“We are continuing to see Alabama’s employers adding jobs at a record pace,” continued Washington. “Our economy is supporting more jobs than ever before. Additionally, our average weekly wages have increased to their second highest level ever.”

Total private sector average weekly wages increased in June to $1,043.70, representing a yearly increase of $41.47. The highest average weekly wages were $1,044.12, recorded in December 2023.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby and Morgan Counties at 2.3%, Marhsall and Cullman Counties at 2.4%, and Madison, Limestone, and Elmore Counties at 2.5%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Wilcox County at 8.5%, Perry County at 6.8%, and Dallas County at 6.0%.

Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, and Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers are the Top Jobs in June

MONTGOMERY - Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division shows that in June 2024, there were 82,270 job ads posted in Alabama, representing a monthly increase of 3.3%.

The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Fast Food and Counter Workers, and Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers with 12,959 ads placed for those occupations in June.

The HWOL data is compiled from all online job postings in the state, including those posted on the state’s free online jobs database, AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, and other sources, such as traditional job boards, corporate boards, and social media sites.

In June 2024, there were 31,710 total job ads with salaries, including 8,057 jobs ads with salaries of $70,000 and above; 8,034 jobs ads with salaries in the $35-49,000 range; 6,249 jobs ads with salaries in the $50-69,000 range, and 9,370 jobs ads with salaries less than $35,000.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in June were Huntsville Hospital with 878 ads and UAB Medicine with 816 ads. The rest of the top 10 were: Walmart (748), The University of Alabama at Birmingham (657), Baptist Health (509), Taco Bell (495), Auburn University (461), Sonic Drive-in (451), The University of Alabama (450), and Dollar General (446).

This month’s HWOL Occupation Focus is Insurance Sales Agents. Those employed in this occupation sell life, property, casualty, health, automotive, or other types of insurance and may refer clients to independent brokers, work as an independent broker, or be employed by an insurance company. They may also customize insurance programs to suit individual customers, often covering a variety of risks. Typically, employees in these occupations usually need a high school education or GED and usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training. Alabama Department of Workforce AML Program Advances Community Safety and Environmental Restoration

MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama Department of Workforce (ADOW) Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Program continues its mission to enhance safety and restore environments across Alabama by investing federal funds to address hazards left by unregulated coal mining operations prior to 1977. With a robust portfolio of completed, ongoing, and planned projects, the AML Program is making significant strides in revitalizing communities statewide.

In the past year, the AML Program has invested approximately $8.25 million to resolve critical environmental and safety concerns in communities such as Moody, Adger, Vestavia Hills, and West Blocton.

Currently, the program is directing over $20.7 million toward reclamation efforts in Nauvoo, Empire, Irondale, Tuscaloosa, Helena, and West Blocton. These projects tackle dangerous highwalls, hazardous equipment, vertical openings, mine portals, and other legacy mining hazards to ensure safer environments for Alabama’s communities.

The AML Program has also issued invitations to bid for reclamation projects in Haleyville and Warrior, alongside a semi-annual maintenance package for recently completed sites in West Blocton, Vestavia Hills, Oakman, Moody, Nauvoo, Ragland, and Adger. These efforts represent an investment of over $1.7 million in our communities and also provide good-paying construction jobs for the citizens of the State.

Looking ahead, the AML Program anticipates investing an additional $11 million by the end of 2025 for design and construction projects in Jasper, Odenville, and Oakman. While three AMLER-funded projects are slated for bidding soon, these are not included in the $11 million projection. All planned bids remain subject to approval.

“Through the AML Program, we are not only addressing the scars left by decades-old mining practices but also investing in the safety and prosperity of Alabama’s communities,” said Secretary Greg Reed of the Alabama Department of Workforce. “These projects reflect our commitment to transforming hazardous sites into safe, sustainable spaces for current and future generations. We’re proud to partner with private landowners as well as local communities to make a lasting impact.”

The ADOW AML Program works to reclaim and restore lands affected by pre-1977 coal mining operations, focusing on public safety and the environment. Average Weekly Wages See Increase; Two Sectors See Record Highs

Unemployment Rate Drops to 2.9%

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Secretary of Workforce Greg Reed announced today that average weekly wages increased in August to $1,117.54, its second highest level ever.  This represents a yearly increase of $72.63 per week.

Additionally, both the manufacturing sector and the leisure and hospitality sector saw record high wages in August. The manufacturing sector realized a yearly increase of $84.36 per week, and the leisure and hospitality sector realized a yearly increase of $45.74 per week.

“Wage growth is always something to celebrate and is a positive indicator of economic activity,” said Reed.  “I’m optimistic that these wages will continue to increase. Increased wages help drive positive growth statewide, for both employers and employees.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted August unemployment rate is 2.9%,  down from July 2025’s rate of 3.0%.  August’s rate is lower than August 2024’s rate of 3.1%.  The rate represents 68,191 unemployed persons, compared to 72,473 in July and 74,115 in August 2024.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 30,242 over the year to 2,310,036. The civilian labor force also increased over the year to 2,378,227, with 24,318 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 15,400 to 2,205,700, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+5,900), the government sector (+4,000), and the manufacturing sector (+2,900), among others.

The labor force participation rate for August dropped slightly to 57.7%. The percentage of prime-age workers decreased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 78.3% over the month. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby, Elmore, and Blount Counties at 2.1%, St. Clair, Morgan, Marshall, Madison, Limestone, DeKalb, and Autauga Counties at 2.2%, and Cleburne and Baldwin Counties at 2.3%. Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Perry County at 5.9%, Greene County at 5.7%, and Wilcox County at 5.6%.

Alabama’s Unemployment Rate Drops to 2.7% in November

Weekly Wages Reaches New Record High

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November decreased to 2.7%. This is down from November 2024’s rate of 3.3%.  The rate represents 65,078 unemployed persons, compared to 78,802 in November 2024.

“It’s always a good day when we are able to announce that we’ve set three new records in Alabama,” said Reed. “We continue to see improvement in our labor force, including how many people are working and how many jobs our economy is supporting. We are all working together to ensure that Alabama is positioned in its best light for the upcoming new year.”

The number of people counted as employed increased by 31,401 over the year to 2,312,892, a new record high. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,377,970, with 17,677 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 12,400 to 2,223,800, also a new record high, with gains in the leisure and hospitality sector (+7,800), the private education and health services sector (+6,800), and the construction sector (+3,900), among others.

“This industry growth is remarkable and shows that our continued dedication to establishing and nurturing partnerships between government and business is paying off. Yet again, we have record high job growth across the state,” continued Reed. “Wages are at a record high -Alabama’s families are realizing the fruit of our efforts, and we are committed to keeping them high.”

Average weekly wages increased by $83.65 over the year to a new record high of $1,148.80.

Alabama’s Labor Force Participation Rate Holds Steady at 57.6

Labor Force and Those Counted as Employed Mark New Record Highs

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for January held steady at 57.6%. The percentage of prime-age workers increased by three-tenths of a percentage point to 78.9 % over the year. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

“We continue to see gains in the participation of prime-age workers in Alabama,” said Reed. “That means that more than three out of four of these workers are in the labor force, and they are working. We will continue our efforts to increase this number overall, by increasing training opportunities and targeting populations that have traditionally been marginalized when it comes to labor force participation.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted January unemployment rate is 3.3%, unchanged from December 2024’s rate. January’s rate is above January 2024’s rate of 2.9%.  The rate represents 78,288 unemployed people, compared to 78,478 in December and 66,845 in January 2024.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 23,534 over the year to 2,285,631, a new record high. The civilian labor force also increased to a new record high of 2,363,919, with 34,977 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 25,600 to 2,181,400, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+8,000), the government sector (+7,400), and the manufacturing sector (+4,500), among others.

“Regarding our jobs count, employers in Alabama added more than 25,000 jobs over the year,” continued Reed. “This means that employers remain confident in our job market and are continuing to expand their businesses.”

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby County at 2.7%, Elmore, Limestone, Marshall, and St. Clair Counties at 2.8%, and Lee, Madison, and Morgan Counties at 2.9%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Greene County at 9.1%, Wilcox County at 6.9%, and Perry County at 6.6%.

Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates are: Homewood, Trussville, and Vestavia Hills at 2.4%, Pelham at 2.5%, and Hoover and Madison at 2.6%.  Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Prichard at 7.4%, Selma at 6.4%, and Anniston at 4.8%.

“Seasonal adjustment” refers to BLS’s practice of anticipating certain trends in the labor force, such as hiring during the holidays or the surge in the labor force when students graduate in the spring, and removing their effects to the civilian labor force.

The Current Population (CPS), or the household survey, is conducted by the Census Bureau and identifies members of the work force and measures how many people are working or looking for work.

The establishment survey, which is conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, surveys employers to measure how many jobs are in the economy.  This is also referred to as wage and salary employment.

Alabama’s February Unemployment Rate Holds Steady at 2.7%

State Sets New Record High Wage

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted February unemployment rate is 2.7%, unchanged from January’s rate. It is below February 2025’s rate of 3.0%.  The rate represents 64,831 unemployed persons, compared to 64,057 in January and 71,929 in February 2025.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 14,603 over the year to 2,321,473. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,386,304, with 7,505 more people joining over the year.

Over the month, wage and salary employment increased by 12,000 to 2,195,300, with gains in the leisure and hospitality sector (+3,600), the government sector (+3,300), and the private education and health services sector (+3,200), among others.

“Yet again, Alabama is adding jobs and people to the labor force,” said Reed. “Employers are hiring, and wages are continuing to rise. In fact, last month, Alabama had the fourth largest wage increase in the country! These are all positive indicators for our economy.”

Average weekly wages in Alabama increased by $62.71 over the year, to a new record high of $1,175.01. Last month, Alabama had the fourth highest wage increase in the country with a growth percentage of 8.0%.

Additionally, the following sectors also realized new record high wages: manufacturing ($1,384.33), trade, transportation, and utilities ($989.30), financial activities ($1,377.89), professional and business services ($1,467.02), and leisure and hospitality ($456.04).

Registered Nurses, Customer Service Representatives and Retail Salespersons are the Top Jobs in February

MONTGOMERY - Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Workforce’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division shows that in February 2026, there were 104,060 job ads posted in Alabama, representing a monthly increase of 9,864 ads or 10.5% over the month. This also shows an 11.7% increase over the year from February 2025.

The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Customer Service Representatives, Retail Salespersons, General and Operations Managers and Fast Food and Counter Workers with 9,636 ads placed for those occupations in February.

In February 2026, the median advertised wage was $57,605 per year.  There were 0.54 candidates for every one job opening in February 2026.

“February’s online job ads highlight continued strength and momentum in Alabama’s economy, with industries predicting growth across critical sectors like healthcare, retail, and customer service,” said Workforce Secretary Greg Reed. “The future of Alabama’s workforce is bright, as industry recognizes Alabama’s potential and is responding in kind. The increase in job postings, along with rising advertised wages, signals strong opportunities for job seekers while reinforcing the need to further develop our workforce pipeline,” Reed continued.

“Our career centers across the state are willing and able to assist citizens throughout the application process, helping connect Alabamians with these in-demand career opportunities.”

The top two employers posting the most online ads in February 2026 were Huntsville Hospital with 1,170 ads and UAB Health System with 867 ads. The rest of the top 10 were: The University of Alabama at Birmingham (662), Baptist Health (521), DCH Health System (379), The University of Alabama (321), Greer’s (321), Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center (316), USA Health (309) and East Alabama Health with 295 online job ads listed.

Alabama’s Labor Force Participation Rate Increases to 57.7%
Wages Reach New Record High; Employment and Labor Force at Record Highs

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for February increased to 57.7%, up from 57.6% in January. The percentage of prime-age workers increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 78.8% over the year. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

“We’re seeing positive trends in our labor force participation rate,” said Reed. “Increases, even smaller ones, are pointing us in the right direction. Both the general labor force participation rate and the rate for prime age workers showed improvement. On top of that, more people are in the labor force than ever before, and more people are working than ever before. That’s great news in Alabama!”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 3.3%, unchanged from January 2025’s rate, and up from February 2024’s rate of 2.9%.  The rate represents 77,813 unemployed persons, compared to 78,249 in January and 67,091 in February 2024.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 26,691 over the year to 2,290,880, a new record high. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,368,693, a new record high, with 37,413 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 19,500 to 2,195,400, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+7,300), the government sector (+6,400), and the manufacturing sector (+4,700), among others. Over the month, wage and salary employment grew by 14,800, with gains in the professional and business services sector (+3,400), the private education and health services sector (+3,400), and the manufacturing sector (+2,800), among others.

“I’m also excited to report that Alabamians’ paychecks are growing,” continued Reed. “Average weekly wages increased by nearly $80 a week since last year, representing a 7.7% increase, which is also a new record high.”

Total private average weekly wages increased to $1,110.89 in February, representing an increase of $45.52 over the month, and an increase of $79.68 over the year.

Jobs Count Increases by More Than 40,000 Over the Year

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for August is unchanged at 57.5%. The percentage of prime-age workers increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 79.4% over the month. Over the year, this number increased by 1.6 percentage points from 77.8%. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

“Prime age workers are continuing to do their part here in Alabama,” said Washington. “Each month, we move closer and closer to 80 percent of this population either working or looking for work. This is also reflected in our civilian labor force population increasing to a new record high, along with the number of people who are employed.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 2.8%, unchanged from July 2024’s revised rate. August’s rate is above August 2023’s rate of 2.5%. The rate represents 66,619 unemployed persons, compared to 66,566 in July and 58,570 in August 2023.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 19,816 over the year to 2,276,999, a new record high. The civilian labor force also increased to a new record high of 2,343,618, with 27,865 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 43,200 to 2,208,000, with gains in the private education and health services sector (+12,800), the manufacturing sector (+8,500), and the trade, transportation, and utilities sector (+6,900), among others.

“Employers added over 43,000 more jobs in the past year,” continued Washington. “This is great news for our economy and we’re seeing growth in multiple sectors.”

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are: Shelby County at 2.6%, Morgan and Madison Counties at 2.8%, and Cullman, Elmore, Limestone, Marshall, and St. Clair Counties at 2.9%. Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Wilcox County at 8.9%, Perry County at 6.9%, and Clarke County at 6.4%.

Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates are: Vestavia Hills at 2.3%, Trussville at 2.4%, and Alabaster, Homewood, and Madison at 2.5%. Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Selma at 7.2%, Prichard at 5.9%, and Anniston at 4.8%.

Alabama’s March Unemployment Rate Holds Steady at 2.7%

State Sets New Record High Wage

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted March unemployment rate is 2.7%, unchanged from February’s rate. It is below March 2025’s rate of 3.0%.  The rate represents 65,474 unemployed persons, compared to 64,830 in February and 70,862 in March 2025.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 11,027 over the year to 2,318,507. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,383,981, with 5,639 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 11,200 to 2,198,100, with gains in the leisure and hospitality sector (+5,000), the private education and health services sector (+4,600), and the professional and business services sector (+3,300), among others.

“Wages in Alabama continue to rise and to represent some of the highest year over year increases in the nation,” said Reed. “Our commitment to business and industry means that we will continue working to lead quality, high-paying jobs to our state. These increases in wages are reflecting that commitment and our dedication to creating the best workforce in the country.”

Average weekly wages in Alabama increased by $71.64 over the year, to a new record high of $1,178.60.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are: Shelby County at 2.2%, Elmore County at 2.3%, and St. Clair, Morgan, Marshall, Madison, Limestone, Lee, Chilton, and Blount Counties at 2.4%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Perry County at 6.5%, Monroe County at 6.1%, and Greene County at 6.0%.

Alabama’s Unemployment Rate Increases Slightly in April

State Sets New Record High Jobs Count

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that Alabama’s April preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 2.8%, up slightly from March’s rate of 2.7%, and below April 2025’s rate of 2.9%.’s rate. The rate represents 67,115 unemployed persons, compared to 65,467 in March and 69,951 in April 2025.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 3,579 over the year to 2,311,287. The civilian labor force also increased to 2,378,402, with 1,103 more people joining over the year. Prime-aged workers (25-54 years old) are working at a rate of 79.3%.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 13,200 to 2,211,300, a new record high, with gains in the government sector (+4,700), the private education and health services sector (+4,100), and the leisure and hospitality sector (+3,400), among others.

Construction jobs in Alabama grew to 111,800, marking the industry’s highest employment level since January 2008. Additionally, average weekly wages in the manufacturing sector increased to a new record high of $1,407.08, also representing the first times wages in this sector surpassed the $1,400 mark.

“Construction and manufacturing are among the most vital sectors of our economy,” continued Reed. “When we continue to see growth and even more importantly, wage growth, in these sectors, that signifies sustained economic growth. Additionally, we are continuing to see Alabama employers adding jobs and hiring workers at record levels.”

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby and Elmore Counties at 2.0%, Morgan, Marshall, Limestone, Lee, Chilton, Chambers, and Blount Counties at 2.1%, and Madison, Lawrence, Franklin, DeKalb, Cleburne, Baldwin, and Autauga Counties at 2.2%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Greene County at 5.5%, Monroe and Perry Counties at 5.3%, and Wilcox County at 4.9%.

Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates are: Trussville and Pelham at 1.7%, Vestavia Hills at 1.8%, and Alabaster at 1.9%. Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Prichard at 5.4%, Selma at 4.7%, and Bessemer at 3.8%.

Registered Nurses, Customer Service Representatives and Retail Salespersons are the Top Jobs in April

MONTGOMERY - Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Workforce’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division

shows that in April 2026, there

were 120,341 job ads posted in Alabama, representing a monthly increase of 5,250 ads or 4.6% over the month. This also shows an 22.6% increase over the year from April 2025.

The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Customer Service Representatives, Retail Salespersons, General and Operations Managers and Fast Food and Counter Workers with 10,188 ads placed for those occupations in April.

In April 2026, the median advertised wage was $53,040 per year.  There were 0.54 candidates for every one job opening in April 2026.

“April’s job posting data reflects Alabama’s continued economic momentum, with more than 120,000 online job ads signaling strong employer demand across healthcare, retail, hospitality, and management occupations,” said Workforce Secretary Greg Reed. “As we enter the summer hiring season, the continued growth in advertised opportunities, combined with rising wages and a competitive labor market, demonstrates that Alabama employers are actively seeking skilled talent to meet workforce needs. These numbers reinforce the importance of strengthening workforce development efforts to connect Alabamians with the high-quality careers available across our state,” Reed continued.

“Our career centers across the state stand ready to help job seekers navigate the application process and connect Alabamians with the growing number of in-demand career opportunities available this summer and beyond.”

The top two employers posting the most online ads in February 2026 were Huntsville Hospital with 1,272 ads and Walmart Inc. with 918 ads. The rest of the top 10 were: McDonald’s (786), The University of Alabama At Birmingham (674), Tacala, LLC (588), Baptist Health – Central Alabama (483), O’Reilly Auto Parts (475), UAB Health System (474), Allied Universal (374) and DCH Health System with 358 online job ads listed.

Inaugural State Agency Job Fair Draws 1,200 Prospective Employees

MONTGOMERY – Attendance at the state’s inaugural State Agency Job Fair surpassed expectations as 1,200 prospective employees attended the event held in Montgomery. The job fair was the first of its kind hosted by the Alabama Department of Workforce, the Alabama State Personnel Department, the City of Montgomery, and WSFA News.

Nearly 2,000 available state jobs were posted on the department’s website from 45 state agencies. The greatest needs were for IT technicians, social workers, accountants, correctional officers, and transportation maintenance mechanics. Positions range in locations across the state.

“The inaugural State Agency Job Fair was a great success and a strong reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together. I’m proud of the collaboration and leadership shown by Secretary Greg Reed, the Alabama Department of Workforce, the State Personnel Department and all our participating agencies. I met with both employers and job seekers, and I saw the opportunities this event created for so many. When we connect the talent in our own backyard to careers in public service, we strengthen our workforce and keep our state government operating most effectively for Alabamians,” said Governor Kay Ivey.

“This was a truly amazing event, and I believe that the attendance speaks for itself,” said Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed. “We know, like many employers across Alabama know, that there is a tremendous need for qualified workers. Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, and Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, are the Top Jobs in March

MONTGOMERY - Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Workforce’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division shows that in March 2025, there were 82,983 job ads posted in Alabama, representing a monthly increase of 2.9%.

The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, and Customer Service Representatives with 12,518 ads placed for those occupations in March.

The HWOL data is compiled from all online job postings in the state, including those posted on the state’s free online jobs database, AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, and other sources, such as traditional job boards, corporate boards, and social media sites.

In March 2025, there were 29,564 total job ads with salaries, including 8,531 jobs ads with salaries of $70,000 and above; 7,702 jobs ads with salaries in the $35-49,000 range; 5,174 jobs ads with salaries in the $50-69,000 range, and 8,157 jobs ads with salaries less than $35,000.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in January 2025 were Huntsville Hospital with 1,141 ads and UAB Medicine with 826 ads. The rest of the top 10 were: Walmart (774), Domino’s Pizza (767), Taco Bell (521), University of Alabama at Birmingham (514), AutoZone (444), Baptist Health (428), Jack’s Family Restaurants (418), and Dollar General with 409 ads.

This month’s HWOL Occupation Focus is Pharmacy Technicians. Those employed in this occupation prepare medications under the direction of a pharmacist and measure, mix, count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications according to prescription orders. They may also receive written prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate, maintain proper storage and security conditions for drugs or Answer telephones, responding to questions or requests. Alabama’s Labor Force Participation Rate Holds Steady at 57.5%

Labor Force, Employment, and Wages All Reach New Record Highs

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Marty Redden announced today that Alabama’s labor force participation rate for September held steady at 57.5%. The percentage of prime-age workers decreased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 79.3% over the month. Over the year, this number increased 1.3 percentage points from 78.0%. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

“Month after month, we are continuing to see yearly growth in the number of prime age workers who are participating in the labor force,” said Redden. “Nearly 80% of these people are working or looking for work. They are a vital part of building Alabama’s workforce. We’re also seeing major growth in the total number of people joining the workforce and finding employment.”

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 2.9%, up from August 2024’s revised rate of 2.8%. September’s rate is above September 2023’s rate of 2.7%. The rate represents 67,405 unemployed persons, compared to 66,621 in August and 61,658 in September 2023.

The number of people counted as employed increased by 18,391 over the year to 2,278,613, a new record high. The civilian labor force also increased to a new record high of 2,346,018, with 24,138 more people joining over the year.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 40,700 to 2,213,300 with gains in the private education and health services sector (+10,800), the trade, transportation, and utilities sector (+ 7,800), and the government sector (+6,700), among others.

Additionally, total private average weekly wages in Alabama hit a new record high, rising to $1,061.20 in September. This is an increase of $40.90 over the year, and $16.29 over the month. One other sector also saw new record high weekly wage amounts this month: the manufacturing sector, which saw a yearly increase of $110.94 to $1,307.67.

“We are pleased to report that wages in Alabama are increasing to new record highs,” continued Redden. “More money in peoples’ pockets means that workers are better able to provide for their families, our economy realizes additional benefits, and also allows us to remain competitive in attracting businesses to our state.”

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby County at 2.3%, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan Counties at 2.5%, and Cherokee, Cleburne, Cullman, Limestone, and St. Clair Counties at 2.6%.  Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Wilcox County at 8.2%, Clarke and Greene Counties at 6.1%, and Dallas and Perry Counties at 5.8%.

Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates are: Homewood, Trussville, and Vestavia Hills at 2.2%, Alabaster and Hoover at 2.3%, and Madison and Northport at 2.4%.  Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Selma at 6.1%, Prichard at 5.8%, and Bessemer at 4.6%.

Alabama Jobs Count Hits a New Record High

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced today that wage and salary employment increased by 21,100 over the year to 2,224,200, a new record high, with gains in the leisure and hospitality sector (+7,500), the construction sector (+5,600), and the government sector (+5,300), among others.

“We are adding jobs every month, and breaking records,” said Reed. “This reflects continued employer confidence in Alabama’s economy and we are committed to building on that momentum. Alabama is a great place to do business and we’re proud to work alongside our business community in delivering quality jobs for our workforce.”

Alabama’s labor force participation rate for June is 57.1%. The percentage of prime-age workers increased to 79.6%, over the year. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years.

61.7% of those who are not being counted in the workforce participation rate are 55 years of age and over.

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted June unemployment rate is 3.2%, up from May 2026’s rate of 3.0%.  June’s rate is above June 2025’s rate of 2.9%.  The rate represents 76,641 unemployed persons, compared to 72,046 in May and 67,728 in June 2025.

The number of people counted as employed decreased by 12,759 over the year to 2,294,118. The civilian labor force also decreased to 2,370,759, with 3,846 fewer people joining over the year.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are:  Shelby and Chambers Counties at 3.2%, Morgan, Limestone, Elmore, and Blount Counties at 3.3%, and St. Clair, Marshall, Madison, and Lawrence Counties at 3.4%. Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Perry County at 7.7%, Greene and Monroe Counties at 6.9%, and Wilcox County at 6.4%.

Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates are: Pelham at 2.9%, Vestavia Hills and Trussville at 3.0%, and Madison, Hoover, and Alabaster at 3.1%.  Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Prichard at 7.0%, Selma at 6.0%, and Anniston at 5.3%.

“Seasonal adjustment” refers to BLS’s practice of anticipating certain trends in the labor force, such as hiring during the holidays or the surge in the labor force when students graduate in the spring, and removing their effects to the civilian labor force.

The Current Population (CPS), or the household survey, is conducted by the Census Bureau and identifies members of the work force and measures how many people are working or looking for work.

The establishment survey, which is conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, surveys employers to measure how many jobs are in the economy.  This is also referred to as wage and salary employment.

In June 2026, the median advertised wage was $55,168 per year.  There were 0.51 candidates for every one job opening in June 2026.

Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, and Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, are the Top Jobs in April

MONTGOMERY - Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Workforce’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division shows that in April 2025, there were 82,007 job ads posted in Alabama, representing a monthly decrease of 1.6%.

The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, and Customer Service Representatives with 13,261 ads placed for those occupations in April.

The HWOL data is compiled from all online job postings in the state, including those posted on the state’s free online jobs database, AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, and other sources, such as traditional job boards, corporate boards, and social media sites.

In April 2025, there were 29,275 total job ads with salaries, including 8,168 jobs ads with salaries of $70,000 and above; 7,666 jobs ads with salaries in the $35-49,000 range; 5,060 jobs ads with salaries in the $50-69,000 range, and 8,381 jobs ads with salaries less than $35,000.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in April 2025 were Huntsville Hospital with 1,019 ads and Domino’s Pizza with 889 ads. The rest of the top 10 were:  Walmart (783),  UAB Medicine (773), AutoZone (764), Taco Bell (519), University of Alabama at Birmingham (517), Auburn University (418), Dollar General (408) and Baptist Health with 402 ads.

This month’s HWOL Occupation Focus is Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers .Those employed in this occupation Drive a tractor-trailer combination or a truck with a capacity of at least 26,001 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). May be required to unload truck. This includes tow truck drivers. They may also maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew and checking that vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned. Typically, employees in these occupations usually need a commercial drivers’ license and  high school diploma or equivalent. The advertised median salary for Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers in Alabama is $70,528. This occupation has 4,565 Annual Total Openings in Alabama.
